Try Working in Word's Draft View

If you'd like to work in your document without the distraction of various fonts an formats, switch to Draft font view while you write. This view displays all words on-screen in the same size and format, eliminating the temptation to fiddle with formatting instead of concentrating on composing your document. Draft font view affects the display only; the document itself is not reformatted. To turn on Draft font view, go to the Tools menu, select Options, click the View tab, then check the Draft Font box. After you've finished composing, turn off Draft font by going to the Draft Font box and unchecking it.
